PURCHASE, NY, April 20 – Aspiring and professional writers alike will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in an intensive week of workshops and craft classes as Summer Writers’ Week returns to Manhattanville College June 26 to June 30.
Hosted annually by the MFA (Master of Fine Arts) in Creative Writing program, this week-long series of workshops welcomes writers of all levels to gain valuable insight into the industry. Attendees will be able to develop new work, refine existing work, finetune their writing process, engage with established writers, and connect with fellow writers.
Iain Haley Pollock, Director of the MFA in Creative Writing Program, is “excited to see how these workshop leaders will push participants to hone their writing skills, but most excited about the community that crops up every year at the event. Writing is a notoriously solitary pursuit, but the bonds forged in spaces such as Summer Writers’ Week supply comrades in literature who can help sustain a writing practice.”
This year, the event will be kicked off with Keynote Reader V.V. Ganeshananthan, author of the novels “Love Marriage” and “Brotherless Night.” Ganeshananthan will lead a craft class and give a reading on the afternoon and evening of Monday, June 26.
Throughout the week, each morning will be spent in a genre-specific workshop, where attendees will have the opportunity to work closely with an experienced writer who will provide feedback and guidance. This year’s workshops will focus on creative nonfiction (Davon Loeb, “The Inbetweens”), fiction (Jonathan Vatner, “The Bridesmaids Union”), poetry (Silvia López Medin, “Poem That Never Ends”), screenwriting (Sharbari Ahmed, “Quantico”), and young adult/middle-grade fiction (Sheela Chari, “Karthik Delivers”). The afternoons will consist of craft classes and an agent panel before evening readings from workshop faculty and local writers. The event will conclude on Friday afternoon with a barbecue on the lawn outside the Barat House, the Creative Writing Program’s home base.
This workshop series will take place on Manhattanville’s scenic Westchester County campus, a beautiful setting that is sure to inspire creativity and community. The campus is just a train ride away from New York City, the cultural capital of the world and home to a vibrant writing scene.
Summer Writers’ Week is open to the public with a $600 registration fee. Current and new MFA students may earn academic credit for their participation.
