The weather most definitely jumped straight into summer, and every beauty lover knows that it’s time to switch up their routines. Especially if you’re unfamiliar with it, navigating summer beauty can be tough. Luckily, this article should have everything you need to be ready for the sun!
First things first, ditch the foundation in the warm weather. Most foundations are really heavy on your skin and have little sun protection. Especially when it’s hot outside and you’ll be sweating, you’ll be more likely to break out or have other skin issues. Swap out your foundation for a tinted moisturizer, but make sure that it has SPF in it. Tinted moisturizers are a lot healthier and lighter on your skin, and when they have SPF, sun coverage is built in. I have used the Tarte BB Tinted Treatment 12-Hour Primer Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Sunscreen in the past. This product is great because it is a primer, tinted moisturizer and sunscreen all in one, and the coverage is perfect for both lazy days and going out. I currently use the Laura Mercier Oil-Free Tinted Moisturizer, which was recommended to me by my esthetician. This is perfect because it helps my skin from getting too oily when it’s humid, it has great coverage, and it doesn’t irritate my skin. There is also a non-oil-free version for those who have dry skin or a need for some type of oil in their base. IT Cosmetics recently debuted the Bye Bye Foundation Full Coverage Moisturizer with SPF 50+, and though I haven’t tried it, I have heard good things and believe that it is definitely something to look into.
The other important part of whatever base you use in the summer is color. A lot of people tend to get tanner in the summer because they are outside more and have more exposure to the sun. Your makeup should reflect this. Unless you know what your summer color is, I highly recommend stopping into Sephora or Ulta (or the new Riley Rose stores that are popping up) and getting color-matched again. Though the foundation is the most important, some people do need to switch their concealers, too. If you’re prone to sunburn or get some redness even after using sunscreen, I would invest in the green Urban Decay Color Correcting Fluid. I use it every time I do my makeup and it does wonders for my hyperpigmentation. When I use it for my dance performances, my redness stays neutralized even with the stage lighting.
Face makeup is not the only thing that changes during the summertime. Warm-toned eyeshadows are a staple in the summer and can be found in the Urban Decay Heat, Morphe 35O, and Laura Lee Cat’s Pajamas. A great budge-proof eyeliner, like the Tarte Maneater or the Kat Von D Tattoo Liner, is the best way to get through even the most humid days. Bronzers and highlighters also become more important. I tend to use more blush (Milani Romantic Rose) in the winter, but I do use more bronzer in the summer (Benefit Hoola or Becca Sunlit Bronzer). Highlighters are always great year-round (duh!), and I will either use a color that matches my outfit or the perfect bronze. The Huda Beauty, Anastasia, Becca, and Fenty highlighters are to die for and I can literally never stop myself from trying to buy more. The summer is also the perfect time to break out that new lip gloss or lip color (but any lip color is perfect all year long). I can’t wait to wear my Fenty Gloss Bomb and Mattemoiselle more, but I am actually addicted to the Huda Beauty Liquid Matte Lipsticks.
In the end, summer is all about enjoying yourself, and your makeup should reflect that. As long as you keep your skin healthy and safe, have fun and experiment with your makeup!
