Summer Writers’ Week Promotional Materials

As a Marketing Coordinator at Manhattanville College, my responsibilities include working with clients across campus to provide support, materials, and resources to promote their program offerings and special events. One of my primary clients is the M.F.A. Creative Writing program, currently under the direction of Iain Pollock. Over the past year, I have worked with the M.F.A. program to develop graphics and promotional materials for signature special events, such as Writers’ Hub Workshops and the Meet the Writers Series. With this, I helped to develop a distinct visual representation for the program and its offerings under the college’s brand standards.

Summer Writers’ Week is an annual weeklong writing retreat that welcomes current students, alumni, and community members to connect with other writers, refine their skills, and learn from industry experts. It is easily the program’s largest and most popular event, so it required an extra boost in promotion. I worked closely with the program director to develop a promotional strategy, as well as a creative direction for the materials.

I began by collaborating with the director in drafting a press release to announce the workshop, as well as the specific offerings for this year’s program. Once the program details were finalized, I also began to develop a poster. While the M.F.A. program has a solid and consistent visual representation in all of its previous materials, I wanted to make the Summer Writers’ Week materials be visually distinct while still maintaining key visual standards. After the poster was developed, the director requested a flyer or brochure that went into more detail about the program, especially the schedule. I took the visual guidelines from the poster and restructured them to fit the newer constraints and to include the additional information.

In addition to internal promotion, these pieces will be distributed to local libraries and bookstores, as well as circulated to partner educators and schools through the School of Education.
