For much of my life, I have been incredibly passionate about the arts. Recently, I was able to bridge my passions for performing arts, storytelling, and digital media production with my work on the Manhattanville College Musical Theatre production of “Damn Yankees!” this fall.
Towards the end of last spring, I began my involvement with this project with a photography session that was co-produced by the musical theatre program and the athletics department. Several of the scenes in the show are set in a locker room and the director of the show wanted to use in-house imagery as opposed to stock images. I took several photos of the staged locker room that would fit the show’s needs and digitally retouched the uniforms in the images to be a perfect match to the early costume concepts.
A few months later, I was welcomed back by the creative team to develop marketing materials tailored to the show- a series of baseball cards. I started the project by taking in-character portraits of the cast and creative team, then began to develop a template for each of the cards that could account for a variety of name and biography lengths. After receiving approved copy for the cards from the director, I completed the set of thirty-seven cards. In addition to being used as promotional pieces on social media, the cards were sold as a complete set at the show. By the end of the run, more than half of the attendees purchased the set.
The week of the show, I returned as the production photographer and videographer. The photos were taken during a dress rehearsal before opening night with the intention of showcasing the program for future promotional events, as well as provide the cast with images that demonstrated their skills for portfolio use. The video was filmed solely for the program’s archival records.
